My Story

Seb was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in December 2019. Over the following 2 years he underwent many treatments including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a successful stem cell transplant. All of which he endured with incredible bravery, selfless courage and without complaint, no matter how hard he fought and how many different treatments he endured, ultimately he couldn’t fight the terrible Graft Versus Host Disease that constantly attacked his severely depleted immune system. We tragically lost our brave, amazing, funny & beautiful son on 21 December 2021.

Our wonderful friends are running the Great North Run in Seb’s memory on Sunday 11th September to raise funds for Candlelighters who rely solely on donations to provide emotional, practical and financial support to the families across Yorkshire who are affected by childhood cancer.

Over the 2 years that Seb was having treatment Candlelighters were a fantastic support for us as a family providing Seb with Easter eggs, Advent calendars, presents at Christmas, a friendly face to chat to, a daily check in when he was an inpatient, a visit from Santa, snacks, drinks and sweets, and providing much needed essentials for the time we spent in hospital (which was just over a year in total) such as washing our clothes, haircuts for mum, offers of a massage, afternoon tea, chats in the day room, coffee beans for the machine and much more.

As well as the practical support we also received financial and emotional support and a weekend away at Centre Parcs, a memory blanket made from Seb’s clothes, a friendly face to talk to over at The Square and many nights’ accommodation while Seb was receiving treatment free of charge at The Cottage just across the road from the hospital. Candlelighters also invest in essential research, fund a trust grade doctor and play workers for the Paediatric Haematology/Oncology wards at the LGI, essential play and IT equipment, away days for parents, siblings and patients across the region and much more that I’m sure to have forgotten to list.

Seb was one of the unlucky few, who despite every effort didn’t get better, many more teenagers and their families will face and beat this terrible illness, please help Candlelighters to help them through.

Candlelighters helped us in so many ways to face Seb’s diagnosis and treatment as a family head on, for which we will be forever grateful.

We'll be taking on a number of challenges and fundraising events so please help us hit our target of £10,000 in memory of Seb Smith, our Jedi forever
