Great Knaresborough Bed Race 8th June 2024

My Story

Staff and parents from All Saints Primary School, Kirkby Overblow are taking part in the slightly barmy but challenging Great Knaresborough Bed Race - a mighty pageant of decorated beds, passengers and runners, combined with a gruelling athletic contest and freezing river swim around a course of 2.4 miles. We are raising money for Candlelighters as three former All Saints pupils have directly benefited from this amazing charity. Last summer, Samuel who was at All Saints from 2010 to 2017 was diagnosed with bone cancer, which was devastating both for him and his family.  Samuel and his family have been brilliantly supported by Candlelighters as Samuel explains:

I have had to spend a lot of time in hospital. So far, I have spent 216 days and 108 nights in hospital. This was scary but also very boring.

While I was in hospital, Candlelighters helped me to feel more comfortable and a lot less scared. The sorts of things they did were bring me a tasty breakfast every morning, as well as snacks such as chocolate (I really like my food). They are also always there when I wanted to talk to about how I was feeling. Cancer is quite scary so having someone to talk to is really important.

One of the Candlelighters’ staff called Ryan, found out that I wanted to play the guitar. He thought this looked like something I would enjoy so he taught me how  to play. This gave me something to focus on while I was in hospital. This made the time pass much quicker and it also meant that I had something to focus my mind on rather than worrying about the cancer. I still play the guitar now. This has been the most important thing to me on my journey through cancer. It has got me through all those days and nights in hospital. I am going to Birmingham for an operation soon, and I will be taking my guitar with me to help me get through it.

Everything that Candlelighters do is reliant on donations from very kind people like you. It would be great if you and your families could help raise money for Candlelighters, so they can continue to support people like me in hospital in a way that is right for each one of us. They are brilliant so by raising money that makes you brilliant as well.

Thank you.

Sam
